USF War Memorial Gym Renovation and Sobrato Center Addition

Built in 1958, War Memorial Gymnasium has been home to USF Dons Basketball, hoisting 3 National Championship banners in the 1950’s and alma mater for pro basketball legends Bill Russell, KC Jones, and Bill Cartwright. In addition to the decades of sporting events, War Memorial houses Athletics Administration offices and team facilities for the University’s 15 athletics programs.

The renovation and addition to the historic War Memorial Gym has been a significant milestone for the USF 2014 Institutional Campus Master Plan. The vision was not only to upgrade sports facilities but to create a new hub for campus activities and events in the form of the Sobrato Center addition. Completed in 2021, the Sobrato Center has added a premium club spectator facility, multi-event campus venue and soon to open Social Justice in Sports Exhibit Museum. The addition will redirect all spectator traffic through a new pedestrian plaza to the new Main West Lobby Entrance Hall, creating a campus crossroads linked to the adjacent University Center.

Renovations have included seismic and accessibility upgrades as well as complete upgrades to the mechanical, electrical and technology systems. New daylighting facades and skylights, lighting and comprehensive audio-visual improvements including digital interactive screen scoreboard update the entire facility. Next phase for completion will be the conversion of the original Entry Lobby to a multi-media Sports Hall of Fame featuring not only basketball lore but many other sports personalities and achievements for men and women alumnae, coaches and instructors.
